Here's a few more Larry Willis comps that deserve transcribing please (on YT):
"Lets Play" off Larry's "Let's Play" 91 cd
"Northwest" off Larry's How Do You Keep The Music Playing" 92 cd
"Missing You" off Larry's "How Do You Keep The Music Playing" 92 cd
"Ezekiel Saw The Wheel" off Larry's "How Do You Keep The Music Playing" 92 cd - this is a traditional African-American hymn (sheet attached) but Larry's version sounds way different. Same comp was on Gary Bartz Qt - Episode One Children Of Harlem 94 cd (with Larry Willis)
Wow, great choice! I was thinking of asking for that one after listening to more of Larry's albums.
Also these great ballads by Larry need transcribing:
"Sensei" and "For Jean" from the Larry Willis Sextet 94 cd "A Tribute To Someone"
"Fallen Hero" and "Steal Away" from Larry's "Steal Away" 92 cd (with Gary Bartz and Cecil McBee). "Steal Away is a traditional african-american spiritual and there's sheets for that on the internet but Larry's version seems a lot different.
"Poor Eric" (a ballad for Eric Dolphy written by Larry) from Jackie McLean's 65 album "Right Now"
"The Day You Said Goodbye" off Larry's "The Big Push" 06 cd
All of these are on YT
I attach liner notes from Larry's "A Tribute To Someone" 94 cd (a tribute to Herbie Hancock). Its interesting to read how close Larry was to Herbie. Never realised that.
The "A Tribute To Someone" comp by Herbie is on this good transcription site: https://www.guillaumenaud.com/guillaume_naud_website/themes_transcriptions_p1.html
Many thanks for your post, and especially for the link! Itís such a great site!
I really dug the sleeve notes by Kohlhaase Ė thanks for sharing that.
I look forward to delve into the tunes in your wish list. Sadly, I am too busy right now, but Iíll get to it someday.
Here's my sketch of Larry Willis' "Sensei". The melody of the piece was rather hard to seize, and I wasn't quite sure where the written melody and improvised melody diverged. Please share your thoughts.
