Hi All
Here is my latest attempt at learning to transcribe jazz tune heads.
This is the first 16 bars or so of Fletcher Henderson's "Soft Winds" played by one of my favorites, Terell Stafford from his "New Beginnings" cd.
There was a transcription on the Jazz Trumpet Solo website by Mark Russo already done of his solo which I am attempting to learn, but I also wanted to play the head. It seems very simple, but I am a complete novice at transcribing so please, comment, correct & suggest.
Thanks

I guess you mean Benny Goodman's "Soft Winds", which is a rather easy 16 bar blues. Here are a couple lead sheets for the tune (sources: "The Colorado Cookbook" and The "Spaces" Fake Book Vol. 3).
Cheers, Ville

Bbrookie,

Good work; a few pointers:

In jazz notation there is a thing called the "Imaginary Bar Line," where the measure can visually be split easily in half. Therefore, don't use quarter notes off of beat two, or half notes off of beat two.

Place chords directly over the first note or rest of each measure, except when placing chords over specific rhythmic hits, in which case each chord goes directly over the note where it sounds.

On "Sonnymoon," those 8th notes off of beat 1 should be beamed to the next 2 8th notes.

Best,
Ed
